In Japan, trains are the main form of transportation.
To ride a train, you always need a ticket.
Here’s a simple guide to buying a train ticket — it can be surprisingly confusing for first-time visitors.
Step 1: Check the Fare to Your Destination
Look at the route map above the ticket machines and find your destination.
The number written below the station name is the fare.
In this example, the fare to “Juso” is 170 yen.

Step 2: Go to the Ticket Machine
Choose a ticket machine that sells paper tickets (not IC card only).
Look for a machine with “Ticket” or “Subway” displayed on the screenStep 3: Insert Money
Step 3: Insert Money
Insert cash (coins or bills).
- Insert bills into the slot on the left labeled “紙幣 BILL.”
- Insert coins (10, 50, 100, or 500 yen) into the coin slot on the right.

Step 4: Select the Fare Amount
Press the button for the fare that matches your destination (e.g., 170 yen).
Note: Some machines automatically issue a ticket if you insert the exact fare.

Step 5: Take Your Ticket
Your ticket will come out—don’t forget to take it.
If you have any change, be sure to take that as well.

Step 6: Go Through the Ticket Gate
Insert the paper ticket into the slot at the ticket gate.
It will come out on the other side—take it and walk through.

Step 7: You Will Need the Ticket Again at Your Destination
You will need your ticket again when you get off the train.
Be sure to keep it with you until the end of your journey.
Bonus: If You Are Using an IC Card
IIf you have an IC card (like ICOCA), you can simply tap it on the “IC” mark at the gate without buying a paper ticket.

Now you’re ready to buy train tickets smoothly in Japan!
If you’re unsure about anything, don’t hesitate to ask a station staff member—they’re usually happy to help.
Enjoy exploring Kyoto and the Kansai region by train. Have a great trip!
